Southie Boy….

Southie Boy….

This new documentary directed by Padriac Farma looks good! I have been waiting for something like this to come along. Here’s a description from his website : In September of 1974 the doors of South Boston High School opened to the roaring crowd of protestors

The transplant effect…

The transplant effect…

So everyone is familiar with the 363 Southie 3 on 3 video from last week. Well Danny Picard threw this up on his FB page yesterday :

I closed out today’s show with a passionate rant directed at the “new residents” in South Boston who are attempting to turn our sacred Street Hockey Court into another tennis court.

That’s right….the “new residents” are trying to demolish the hockey rink that for generations has meant so much to so many in South Boston. While you will never hear me come straight out and renounce investment within any of the neighborhoods of Boston. One thing you will see me defend to my dying breath is the destruction of Bostonian culture. With gentrification comes a dilution of the local traditions that make up the fabric of the neighborhood in which it takes place. It’s ok to have people from other parts of the state or the country settle in Boston and rub elbows with the locals. In a perfect world “new residents” bring their traditions to the table while locals share theirs. Traditions on both sides are to be respected and embraced but never infringed upon….therefore creating balance.

Don’t listen to my Boston accent and assume it’s an oddity. Listen to it and assume it’s derived from the way a Bostonian spoke before we started the American Revolution. When was the last time you heard someone from Britain pronounce their R’s?

This rink represents one of those South Boston traditions and should be respected as such. Whether it was just a matter of climate or Bobby Orr, hockey has been embedded in our Bostonian DNA. I know the outsiders really think it’s all about Fenway, pink hats, and Sweet Caroline but we truly are a hockey town. The Bruins are an original six team for good reason.

Long before there was interest in Southie as a trendy place to live, neighborhood kids found refuge in places like the Farragut rink. To some it’s a place to socialize, to others a place that helps foster a career in hockey and to parents it’s served as a place for kids to focus and stay out of trouble. When those kids grow to have families of their own, they return to Farragut with their sons and daughters….and the tradition is passed on. Much like playing Tennis may be a tradition in an affluent Connecticut suburb.

Now why does a Dot Rat have so much passion about a rink in Southie?

Along with many families of Irish decent around Boston, our American story began in South Boston roughly 140 years ago on West  2nd street. Aside from the roots, I feel a kinship with residents of Southie. Many of us traveled the same paths, went to the same schools and had intertwined families. I always got the sense our core principals were in line, and that we are cut from the same cloth.

Most of all, if someone was pulling this sh*t in one of our parks I would expect South Boston to have our backs.

One thing we can brag about in Boston is preservation of history and tradition. I don’t want Southie to become the next Brighton. Do you know anybody born and raised in Brighton? How about Allston? Exactly….

The folks at city hall should listen up….

I gotta admit this flick 363: The Road to the Southie 3-on-3 is pretty bad ass. What a production….Danny Picard and his boys did an incredible job making it. I felt like I was watching an ESPN special or something. It brought back good memories

The husky section is ova theah!!

The husky section is ova theah!!

My how Southie has changed, some changes for the better, some changes…not so much. I think there’s more people from Connecticut and New Jersey living in Southie these days than Massachusetts people. It’s been a windfall for local businesses for sure. But I have to admit I

They still show up…

They still show up…

I decided to take a spin with my bro today and check out the dodgeball tourney down at good old Toohig Park. This tourney has been in the works with Eddie Strumm and his boys for quite some time. Today, it obviously took on a more special meaning.

It’s a bit of a younger crowd, some Dot Rats, a few Southie kids. An old fashioned get together that brought back memories of the Jazz Tourney for me.

For those of you not familar, Jazz Maffie was a kid from the neighborhood who passed away suddenly years ago. Jazz was the son of Adolph who happened to be a historical figure around Boston. Every year on the Saturday before Dot Day….the boys get together and throw a basketball tourney in his memory. The Maffie familiy was loved throughout the neighborhood.

So I’m hanging out, a ton of faces look familar regardless of their age, probably because I was doing the same exact thing 20 years back with their parents. Eddie’s team is up “Team Swag”….they still played shorthanded in Ed’s absence and hung his jersey at center court in his honor.

Team Swag goes deep in the tourney but ends up getting knocked out…being shorthanded finally caught up with them. My bro points out this one kid on the team with an absolute rifle for an arm…he always seems to be the last one on the court taking on 2 or 3 other kids. I didn’t catch his name but he was an absolute beast out there. This kid wanted to win for Eddie…it was noticable.

The mood was a bit somber at points, maybe because some of them thought I was a cop or something. It has been a tough year for the younger crew around Dot. But as an older Rat, I couldn’t help but feel good about these kids. Why? Because they show up for one another….thats a huge lesson in these parts. It’s a neighborhood at it’s finest….it’s something my generation has passed on to the next….and I feel good about that. The parents around Dot and Southie have done well…for years they showed up for Jazz Maffie…..and today their kids showed up for Eddie Strumm.

Ohhh hot dogs!!

Ohhh hot dogs!!

When it comes to hot dogs, Sullivan’s has always been a favorite. I can remember piling into my aunt’s station wagon and making the trek over to Castle Island from Dot on hot summer days. Unlike today, swimming in Boston harbor during the 80’s wasn’t

PS Gourmet in Miami?

PS Gourmet in Miami?

So the PS Gourmet shot their own commercial. Decent coffee, even better coffee cake in my opinion. One problem though….why is their commercial being aired in Miami on ESPN. Apparently the folks down in Miami think the commercial is hilarious because of the accents. I

Friggin Italians…

Friggin Italians…

Those Italian cab drivers have a way with the ladies don’t they? We all know Italian guys love the Irish chicks….but does Bobby really have to trash Irish dudes while running his game on female passengers?

You know what they say about big feet right?  Ya….big Adidas!

He really pulled the shoe size maneuver? I gotta hand it to him, Bobby has b*lls driving around Southie talking trash about the Irish.

The Parade and other Shenanigans…

The good old St. Patty’s parade….the point in the year where everyone comes back to Boston to try to party like an Irishman. Overall it’s still a great time for friends and family…but there will always be the amateurs who think the day is just about turning
