The Scally Cap…

The Scally Cap…

So in keeping with the tradition of being completely random with my posts, I have decided to have a word regarding something very important to me…the Scally cap. Sure some of your are like “WTF Dot Rat…are these hats really that important?” to which I

So I have a watch problem…

Hi, I’m Dot Rat and I’m a Watchaholic…. (this is when you all go “Hi Dot Rat”) YES! I admit it…it’s taken me a while to finally come clean…I have a legit problem with watches. Not really sure where this comes from because over the

Hey Baxter…

Hey Baxter…

Is this robot really going to help bring jobs back into the US? If you think about it, Baxter is the equivalent of one Chinese laborer. I’m guessing one Baxter would be priced at around 25 to 30k. When all the technology has matured and you factor in the company recouping all the money spent on R&D….you may hit 10 to 15k…then throw in maintenance costs and a possible yearly support contract. Technology has always been America’s strong suit and I can totally see us competing with a robot as part of the formula.

But you always have to consider the greed factor. You get some overpaid tight ass CEO who thinks he can squeeze a few more rubles into his bonus check by putting Baxters all over his production floor. This hits the Wall Street Journal and it’s game over….kiss your US Manufacturing renaissance goodbye. Then it’s time to kick Baxter off a bridge.

Making music in Massachusetts…

Here’s the incredibly cool story of the Zildjian cymbal company. I had no idea they had such a rich history. Kudos to them for keeping their operations right here in Massachusetts! [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3eHs6EV5rM] [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGPfE_Y992E]

Not your Granddaddy’s Caddy…

For the past decade Cadillac has done a complete 180 and has managed to put itself back in the conversation when you speak of the best luxury car brands on the planet. One of their most successful and acclaimed models has been the CTS-V. At

The Shark Tank isn’t American Made…

The Shark Tank isn’t American Made…

Shark Tank has to be one of my favorite shows. Every time I watch, I learn a little something about the dynamics of business. But this weekend was by far one of the best episodes ever. Why? Because each one of the sharks showed their true colors. They couldn’t bring themselves to invest in Invis-a-rack, a small company whose owner, Donny McCall, insisted on keeping all his operations in USA to help employ the people of his town. The rack system he makes for pickup trucks is truly genius. They all asked Donny to consider moving production off shore to “compete”. This is actually shark lingo for I can put way more money in my pocket by building it in China.

There was money to be made here at a 100K for a 10% stake in the company but every shark did not want to invest in American workers at a smaller margin and a  longer term. I say b*llshit!! This quick kill mentality is exactly what is rotting our economy. People do want a quality product even if it costs a few bucks more.

I was a little surprised that Robert Herjavec didn’t take the leap of faith after this emotional rant.

I say screw them….Invis-a-rack is a great product. The company can make it and I’m going to do my part to put the word out for them. I want Donny and his town to flourish.

Windshield wiper advice…

Windshield wiper advice…

We all typically change our windshield wipers once a year because of our brutal winters here in the northeast. You hit your local auto parts store and buy any typical beam blade (flexible blade) for instance. Your looking at 15 to 20 bucks per side for a Chinese blade that will last another year.

Get with the program, buy an American made Silblade for a few bucks more and get a 5 year warranty. You support Americans and spend a lot less per year on wipers for your vehicle.
