Gronked….
Oh hey, what’s up! Just trying to finish digging out of the f*cking igloo I used to call a house. What a crazy few weeks there. The Pats obviously smacked the daylights out of a few teams on the way to their 4th Lombardi Trophy…..I …
Is it Marty running for president in 2020? http://instagram.com/p/x0OZAkKppp/ In case you didn’t notice Marty Walsh just absolutely crushed the State of the City address…. This is why we needed a Dot Rat running things! Now if you will all excuse me, I need to …
Your boy is a coffee nut as most of you folks may know from some of my previous rants. The best way to tell that you’re drinking good coffee is to try an establishment’s house blend. You know….that “go to” regular java with no frills, melted candy bars, syrups or 9 pounds of whipped cream whipped with NitrousWhip. God…I sound like an old man but, while cute girls in yoga pants are certainly appealing while waiting in line to any red blooded guy, it’s no substitute for quality. We may smile while we are in the store but if the coffee sucks….well….you end up turning into Randy Savage when you leave…….don’t be Randy Savage.
And yes, you ladies out there deserve your own coffee spot with cute guys serving coffee. Sure I would offer my services but, if I decided to stuff all this love in some yoga pants the place would be bankrupt in a week. Although, if I used coffee from that little slice of heaven on Dot Ave people may put up with my yoga pants a lot longer….
That’s right, our winner for the Best Coffee in Dot award goes to the Sugar Bowl Cafe. With 382 votes cast – the Sugar Bowl managed to secure 167 votes. There is a great group of smaller coffee shops around Dot these days and they all do a great job but, the Sugar Bowl seems to nail it with their best drip coffee maker, ambiance and price for the last 11 years.
The interior is a spacious well preserved time capsule containing all the incredible woodwork we grew up with in our houses all over Dot. It’s a great place to sit and read the paper, catch up with friends or just pretend like you’re working on something really important.
They serve great sandwiches, ice cream, pastries and everything is fresh! To put the cherry on the awesome sundae that is the Sugar Bowl Cafe – They get to sport the Stanley Cup of coffee houses….BLAM!
Congrats to the entire crew at the Sugar Bowl Cafe on a job well done – you are Dot’s King of Coffee!

Are you the guy that can drink beers and American Honey all day then hit Hemey Park, put one over the fence and be up for church the next day? Maybe you’re the gal that can organize PTO meetings, work a shift, get the kids to hockey, food …
There’s been so much discussion about the CIA torture report over the past couple of days. While I understand that our president needs to be honest about his policies I can’t find an inch of remorse for those who dealt with the CIA methods. Sure, I believe in setting high standards as a country….but once your enemy goes below those standards the gloves need to come off. You have all these folks who never even set foot in a recruiter’s office telling soldiers and operators with more than a decade under their belt how to treat the enemy. Did we all forget what this country military is actually capable of?
We never took the gloves off we merely loosened the laces….
You gotta wonder if it feels like torture to not call your family before being burned over 80% of your body then deciding the best option is to dive out of a 99th story window. I wonder what it feels like to get beheaded for providing food to starving kids in a war zone. Is it torture to recover dead children from the rubble of a building before dying your own slow death from lung disease obtained while working in that environment? Is it torture to lose any sense of independence while learning to walk again after losing your legs to an IED?
Liberty isn’t free people – and war is very ugly.
The innocent suffered immensely on our side as well….some of whom would have opted for the treatment the CIA dished out instead of what they had to endure.
While you were at home sipping wine watching some old sea hags from LA complain about their botox treatments on TV. Someone, somewhere suffered greatly to make sure you had that luxury.
In short —- get with your f*cking team!
Gotta take a moment to give a big shout out to three of Dorchester’s finest currently serving in the Marines. Before I do, I would like to acknowledge some others folks. As we all know there’s nothing more honorable than serving your country. To wake …
How did I end up here? So I’m reading up on this weird chemical listed on my chewing gum called Phenylalanine…. I’m digging through various articles and figuring out that it’s a man made amino acid that tricks your brain into sensing sweetness. I hit …
Why is everyone staring at me? A czar is a pizza….am I the only one that remembers that?
Anthony’s at Adam’s Village makes czars and they do an incredible job at it.
How did I come to this conclusion? Well in terms of pizza around Dot, HiFi basically set the gold standard 35+ years ago. As we all know HiFi no longer exists but Anthony’s scores high marks based on that standard. And, to truly judge a pizza you have to sit down at the establishment….which I did last Saturday. Simply because if you put a pizza into a delivery bag to keep it hot, the steam ruins the crust by sogging in out. This is why you need a chubby dude like me writing reviews….
Now, there’s tons of pizza shops that order all their ingredients straight from the provisions company pre made….including pizza dough and sauce. I’m sure that can be lucrative but it doesn’t tend to sit will with consumers.
Everything at Anthony’s is made fresh daily which can be labor intensive for a pizza shop to have as it’s mantra but, it does come through in the food. I started with a small tuna sandwich and this may seem trivial but, a simple tuna sandwich serves as a good gauge because most shops you order tuna from don’t put much effort into it. They usually throw some cheap light grade tuna in a plastic bin and drown it with mayo. Anthony’s used a quality tuna and didn’t need to disguise it…..just like they said….it was fresh. Now on to the pizza!
Their crust game is on point – a little bit of the proofing can be tasted in the crust (yeast)….which is gives it a nice fresh flavor. I have to try one of their multigrain doughs soon.
The sauce is simple – It’s not done my some kitchen magician that thinks his aunt Mary from Dublin’s recipe of ketchup and oregano is going to win awards some day. It tastes Italian, the tomatoes and basil come through and doesn’t take away from the pizza.
And of course the cheese, some folks blend mozzarella and provolone at different ratios to come up with their blend. Some of this is designed to give a bit of saltiness or smoke to the cheese. Anthony’s comes really close to HiFi in this arena!
For you purists they offer all your traditional toppings plus some different looks – I have to try the asparagus, goat cheese, prosciutto and pine nuts.
The only thing missing at Anthony’s is this guy Pasquale, he’s an absolute brilliant addition to any fine pizza establishment. (Hat tip to Mark Doherty)
Anthony’s at Adams Village is Dot Rat approved!

Simply put – I’m a firm believer that there are two words in the English language that should never have to be written side by side – Veteran Hardship Fortunately there’s good folks out there that try and do something about it….and you can too. The Saint …
